The rubber gasket that comes with your package is wedged between the rod holder and the gunwale which prevents water from running into the boat from the gunwale. When not in use, the rubber caps stop any seepage of water into the boat. The rubber inserts protect your fishing rod against the stainless steel holder and helps keep your rod snug.
